Perform Basic Water Rescues (Bronze Medallion) – SISCAQU002

This course is recognized as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. It aims to develop the level of judgment, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues and involves practical applications of basic water rescues. The course suits aspiring/current lifeguards, police officers, firefighters or any person involved in rescues (i.e the SES). 

The annual Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR (HLTAID001) certification can be updated in your Perform Basic Water Rescue course (otherwise known as Bronze Medallion).

The course includes a fitness test – a timed “swim” and a “tow”. A basic level of fitness is required for the swim and tow. Participants are encouraged to practice this aspect of the course beforehand. The "swim" is a 400 metre swim in less than 13 minutes and 15 seconds, and the participant is required to start the swim with clothes on. The "swim" breakdown is 100 metres freestyle, 100 metres survival backstroke, 100 metres sidestroke and 100 metres on your front.

The "tow" is a 50 metre swim towards a weak swimmer and then a 50 metre tow back to safety with a time limit of less 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Once again, participants are required to start the swim with clothes on and then discard as required.

  • Requirements: Previous swimming ability and practice of both the "swim" and "tow" is highly recommended. 
  • Cost: $200 + GST 
  • Course duration: 8 hours face-to-face
  • Valid: 1 year
  • Minimum Age: 14 years

Re-accreditation participants must have a current Basic Water Rescues (also known as "Bronze Medallion") certificate to enrol in the re-accreditation course.

Pool Lifeguard - SISSS00111

Do you have a current Pool Lifeguard certificate and require re-accreditation for this course? Please click here to book into the re-accreditation course.

The Mr Paramedic Pool Lifeguard course aims to develop knowledge, judgment and physical abilities for the supervision of people in swimming pools and involves practical applications as well as a theory exam. A Mr Paramedic course is practical, engaging and fun. Course trainers are experienced paramedics with Pool Lifeguard experience. This course is the current minimum industry requirement for employment as a Pool Lifeguard at a swimming pool or Aquatic Facility.

Participant are expected to have experience around the water and have good swimming ability to perform water rescues. Course participants need to perform:

  1. A 25-metre swim and then tow the non-swimmer 25-metres to safety in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds; 
  2. Swim 200 metres continuously in under six minutes; and 
  3. Spinal immobilisation using a Spine Board and head blocks.

Course details

  • Pre-requisite: Participants must have current certification in First Aid – HLTAID003 –  in order to enrol.
  • Cost: $250 +GST 
  • Course duration: *1 day (12 hours) - participants must have a current HLTAID003 Provide First Aid certificate to complete the one-day course)
  • Valid: 1 year
  • Minimum age: 16 years
