This course is recognized as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. It aims to develop the level of judgment, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues and involves practical applications of basic water rescues. The course suits teachers, aspiring/current lifeguards, police officers, firefighters or any person involved in rescues (i.e the SES).
The annual Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR (HLTAID001) certification is inclusive in your Perform Basic Water Rescue course (otherwise known as Bronze Medallion).
The course includes a fitness test – a timed “swim” and a “tow”. A basic level of fitness is required for the swim and tow. Participants are encouraged to practice this aspect of the course beforehand. The "swim" is a 400 metre swim in less than 13 minutes and 15 seconds, and the participant is required to start the swim with clothes on. The "swim" breakdown is 100 metres freestyle, 100 metres survival backstroke, 100 metres sidestroke and 100 metres on your front.
The "tow" is a 50 metre swim towards a weak swimmer and then a 50 metre tow back to safety with a time limit of less 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Once again, participants are required to start the swim with clothes on and then discard as required.
